Sitting high on the South Downs and looking out to sea, this sloping garden is transformed into a network of soft paths and steps linking a host of wellbeing features.
Immediately behind the house sits a pool and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a covered pergola. Paving is a mixture of textured and grey porcelain with contrasting clay pavers. From this area, there is a level change of around 1 metre, which is traversed using single‑piece concrete steps forming a significant design feature. Beds are flanked with dense woodland‑style planting.
Breedon compacted paths, edged in steel, project west and east in smooth curves. To the west is a large semi‑circular bench with a central fire pit. To the east is the first of three corten ponds. Water from each feature is linked by a network of natural streams, using the fall of the land to create pools and waterfalls. Trees and boulders punctuate margins.
The stream runs past a rear‑clad garden studio and discharges into a 15 × 5 m natural pond. The natural paths become a hardwood boardwalk leading to a generous deck sitting over the tranquil, calming water.
The deck steps down into a covered area with a sunken cedar hot tub, benching, sauna, and shower. The journey continues back up the garden, circumventing the immaculate, organic‑shaped lawn with its own automatic mower.
Wall detail is in corten steel, matching the pond and looking great behind large swathes of grasses. Planting has a natural prairie feel with the inclusion of mature trees and shrubs to ensure plants always look at their healthiest, benefitting from an irrigation system fed from a 35,000‑litre rainwater storage tank. A low‑voltage lighting system brings the garden to life at night, with light journeys making all areas accessible and able to be enjoyed 24/7.
